Just a question regarding insurance. Have you guys declared ride sharing to your insurance provider? I know there are many uber drivers out there driving on normal motorist policies, and I am looking to save some money in the long run - wondering if it is a worthwhile exercise/risk to do this.

Hi BL, keeping costs down is important but making a false declaration to insurers is potentially false economy. You can save some money up front but if you have an accident and the insurer discovers that you are a ride share driver, your insurance claim may be compromised.

I have comprehensive insurance issued through NRMA for business purposes and I declared my ride share business to them. I have a lot of discounts through this insurer and this was best for me. I found an insurance broker through Uber Market place and he gave me a rough estimate that was 20% more than NRMA quote.

    Regards,
    RV

NRMA is for NSW, is there anyone for Victoria?
Eddie quoted Allianz, I’ll check it though insurance council webpage return none for Victoria. :(

I'm with SGIO in WA and they do cover ride share. Since I already had another vehicle insured with them I was able to avail of my 50% no claims bonus and 10% loyalty bonus, so a substantial saving. I believe RAC do ride share cover but have a limit on the number of hours for ride sharing ?

How all this washes in VIC given that Uber is still illegal there I don't know, I guess you should just ask Allianz and SGIO if they cover ride share there and get quotes.

Uber legislation was passed last week so it is "officially" legal now after being basically turned a blind eye to whilst it was being resolved in Parliament.

I am with Allianz through a Ride Sharing specialised broker, comprehensive for approx. $230 per month. Was just looking at other options. I'm going to be selling my car in the near future anyway, so it isn't probably going to be as big a deal as I look into the rental & lease markets.

I signed up with Allianz, online, at the beginning of this year. Vehicle usage is described as "This vehicle is used for private/ride share use only" on the policy schedule. Premium is less than $700 per annum.

You seam to be paying too much ($230 per month). What type of car and how old?

Good to hear Uber are no longer breaking the law there.
I have fully comprehensive insurance through SGIO with all the bells and whistles which covers unlmited ride share usage and the premium is $48.10 per month, so it would appear you're being royally ripped off. I suggest you get quotes from some companies yourself instead of trusting a broker who is no doubt interested in commision.

Geesh, seems that way! I'll definitely start doing some of my own enquiries. Thanks for the heads up!
